Emotional Support Animal Letter

What is an Emotional Support Animal?

An emotional support animal (ESA) alleviates symptoms of an emotional disability through affection and companionship.

An emotional support animal differs from a service animal. Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks (such as helping a blind person navigate). Any animal that provides aid, comfort, support, and well-being to an individual through affection, companionship and unconditional positive regard is called an Emotional Support Animal or ESA.

People with emotional disabilities can be exempted from certain federal housing and travel rules if they own an emotional support animal. To receive the exemption, they must meet the federal definition of disabled and must present a letter from a certified healthcare provider, stating that the animal provides emotional support that alleviates one or more of the symptoms or effects of their disability.

What is an Emotional Support Animal Letter?

This documentation is usually a letter from a licensed medical health professional or treating therapist who can establish the disability and need for the Emotional Support Animal.

The letter typically includes the name of the ESA owner and details about the animal (name, breed type, etc.).

Requests for an assistance animal are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Housing providers cannot limit the Emotional Support Animal with general assumptions about certain species or breeds.
